Chapter 13 Advertising

I like the Nike golf ad on television, I also like the ads on Tobacco Free Florida. My favorite ad has to be the Bud Light commercial with the dog.

These ads are my favorite because of their hooks, they grab your attention. The Bud Light ad uses their slogan here we go, while showing a dog named “we go” fetching beers.

I chose the Nike golf ad because of the creativity behind it. I like the way they show their product being used.

The Tobacco Free Florida ads I enjoy because of what they promote. I think promoting the greater good in any advertising is key.

My least favorite ads are the set of Progressive ads. To me, they are overplayed and just annoying.

In order to improve the ads, they could get rid of Flo and just run a regular commercial. I feel like if they just focused on their product more, with a straight delivery it would be a lot better.

Chapter 11

On September 11, 2001 I was in Mrs. Parnell’s third grade class at South Ocala Elementary when the first plane hit. One of the students from another class told us that a plane had hit the White House.

Mrs. Parnell decided to let our class watch, along with the rest of the country as the tragedy occurred. At the time, it looked like a horror movie was occurring right in front of our eyes.

CNN was the network we were watching in class and it taught me the raw side of journalism. When I got home, we watched NBC and they stayed professional but seemed to show human emotion as well.

Television played a crucial role in relaying the in formation as best as possible to the viewer. It seemed as though there was mass confusion on that day for every media outlet.

Print media ran special copies of issues that evening newspapers, magazines ran with the story. The country was coming together that evening through the tragedy.

Television, rallied the country together through the tragedy and showed the power of the American spirit.

Chapter 10 Internet

I am on the internet for several hours a day for school, work, and fun. The internet can be a great asset or a huge waste of time.

The most useful thing about the internet to me is the ability to search, and learn about virtually anything. I believe that the internet connects the world together as a whole.

Out of habit, my favorite search engine is Google; I use it constantly for radio to research topics and information. I prefer Google over Yahoo and Ask because I used Google first.

Search engines go hand in hand with internet because we no longer need things like Encyclopedias because they are right at our fingertips.

My favorite websites are ESPN.com and Facebook.com. ESPN is my favorite site because I love sports news and information. I enjoy Facebook, because it connects memo with friends and family all across the world.

One of the greatest inventions in the past ten years, I believe is the IPhone which I use everyday for almost any task I can think of. The Ipad to me is just a glorified laptop, having said that I believe people already use these devices to search the internet more than laptops and computers.

I believe that, if we continue on the trend we are now laptops and computers could virtually be phased out by something different.  Technology continues to change, however I think the internet will continue to dominate lives.

Chapter 9 Television

My three favorite television shows are House, Big Bang Theory, and, SportsCenter. I enjoy the diversity between my three favorite shows.

House has been one of my favorite shows since it first aired. I love the attitude and, Hugh Laurie plays the way the character of House.

On the other hand, I just started watching Big Bang Theory this past year. Jim Parsons plays a nerdy physicist who lives with his best friend.

My night ends, with SportsCenter a live show that covers the news of the day, in the world of sports.  SportsCenter helps me wind down and prepare for my next day ahead, on the radio.

I think television has gained an audience, no matter how our world transforms; I believe there will always be a television audience.

People turn to television to captivate almost every emotion, I believe television will continue to transform and grow as time evolves.

Chapter 8 Radio

I listen to the radio in the morning and afternoon everyday. My favorite stations are 92 Q FM, and WOCA 96.7 FM 1370 AM.

I listen to 92 Q FM because the new platform of the station is hit music, and it is a local station here in Ocala. WOCA I listen to every afternoon 3-6pm because I work on The Voice of Ocala with Buddy Martin.

I believe radio numbers have declined in recent years, however our ratings have steadily increased as our show has been on air about 27 weeks now. Local radio depends on a local audience and local advertising to survive.

In radio, I believe people get tired of listening to advertising over and over; this causes people to explore things like satellite radio or Pandora. In order for radio to survive, especially locally, I believe we need to connect with our audience better.

In order to connect with our audience at WOCA, we invite our listeners to call in and express how they feel daily. Our show focuses on what is going on both in Ocala, and across the nation.

In radio, advertising is inevitable, but you need to be able to spread the advertising out to gain or sustain an audience.

In today’s society people want their information as fast as possible so, you have to be current with the issues and what is going on right now.

No matter the platform of radio, music, talk or sports listeners want what they are looking for with as limited interruption as possible. I believe, in order to attain these goals radio stations need to space out advertisements better, to keep the listeners actively engaged.

Illegal Downloading Chapter 7

The music industry has been battling the issue of illegal music being downloaded for years. Consequently, to protect the music industry as a whole the government has decided to step in.

I feel like everyone in my generation has been exposed to, or downloaded some form of illegal music, with the internet and cell phone apps being common methods to do this. In order for there to be balance between the government, music industry, and people; everyone needs to work together.

I think the government should not be able to impose such severe penalties for downloading music. However, people should not be able to take something that cost money to make and pay nothing for it.

My friends download music all the time, and they always say they would pay if iTunes were cheaper. What they do not understand is that they are compensating for those who download illegally.

Sadly, people normaly do not change their ways especially if it will not benefit them. I think people believe that they will not be caught by the government because they believe everyone else does it.

To that end, I feel people will always find ways around paying for music.

In America, we want things fast, we want things free, and we want them now. Until this changes, I do not believe there is a viable solution to prevent the downloading of music illegally.

Chapter 6 Movies

My love for movies started when I was twelve=years old. I took my first film class at Howard Middle School.

My three favorite films are To Kill a Mockingbird, Warrior, and The Blind Side. Each movie has different qualities, which make them unique.

To Kill a Mockingbird is a black and white film, which uses the art of shadows to describe the plot and setting of the story. The director did a great job of not allowing the novel to be lost in the film.

Warrior is a film about two brothers who are Mixed Martial Arts fighters. The story of this film is what grips the audience, along with the music, and the variation of shots used.

The Blind Side I enjoyed, because it told a story based off of a novel in such a way that pulled the audience in. This film used voice over’s and imagery to get its’ messages across to the audience.

All of these films have a story to tell and the characters draw the audience in. Vivid imagery, the overall story, and how the director chooses to present it are what make these films great.

I believe these films are classics, and they will continue to stay relevant for generations.

Films are a great medium, and can allow us to escape reality and get caught up in a story.

Chapter 5 Magazines

My three favorite magazines are Sports Illustrated, Ocala Magazine, and ESPN The Magazine.

Sports Illustrated is my favorite magazine because it offers in depth sports coverage. I read the magazine about once a month.

Sports Illustrated is a great magazine to me because of the way it is presented. The magazine not only covers sports, it also prints a swimsuit edition every year, which I think helps gain readership.

I think they could increase their readership by printing more swimsuit editions per year.

Ocala Magazine is another I read a couple of times a year. Honestly I read Ocala Magazine because they wrote a feature story on me.

Ocala Magazine is special because it caters to the city of Ocala and has a local feel. I think the magazine could gain more readers and be better by coming out more than once a month.

ESPN The Magazine is the magazine that I pick up whenever I see it lying around. Dick Vitale sparked my interest in this magazine, when I was a young boy.

ESPN The Magazine creates a sports feel as it covers athletes in depth. I think it would do better if it took us into the minds of coaches more often.

All of these magazines have a great online presence and if they were more affordable I think magazines would reach more people. I also think magazines need to market themselves better in today’s society if they want to make it.

Chapter 4 Newspapers

I believe that newspapers are not as popular with 20’s and 30’s demographics because of social media outlets. Twitter and tumblr being two reasons of the decline in age range. My generation believes that the news is what is happening right now.

Between the social media and smart phones even television is becoming obsolete.

News to this demographic, now comes in 140 characters or less. Our government has even integrated social media as a way to get news to the American people.

If newspapers continue to be published daily, I do not believe that they will gain readership.

In order for newspapers to gain readership, they need to publish their issues monthly and cover less hard news and instead produce more detailed features.

As it is now, newspaper information is usually already dated by the time of publication. In order for newspapers to gain readership, they must change their approach in how they publish the newspaper itself.
